According to new results from the University of Northumbria found that drinking cherry juice greatly improves the quality and duration of sleep.

Researchers from the Faculty of Life Sciences that cherry juice is working to increase levels of melatonin in the body significantly, a hormone that regulates sleep, and can benefit those who find it difficult to sleep due to insomnia from it.


Their findings of the study reveal that people who drank cherry juice has not only increased their hours of sleep, but also improved quality of sleep they have.

In the study, included 20 healthy volunteers in a part of them to drink 30 ml of juice, and the other part juice to drink a placebo twice daily for seven days.

Urine samples were collected from all participants before and during the study to verify and determine the levels of melatonin, a natural compound that significantly affects the sleep-wake cycle.

During the study, participants wore actigraphy monitoring sensor, which monitored their sleep.


The researchers found that when participants drank cherry juice for a week there was a significant increase in the rate of melatonin in the urine (15-16%) than those who drank a placebo juice.
