The use of technology to detect landmines for breast cancer

The use of technology to detect landmines for breast cancer
British scientists use the technique against landmines for the development of a new system for breast cancer screening, which can detect signs of disease within eight seconds.

Scientists said this system, called MARIA, is safer, faster and more comfortable than mammography, and the way this is now the most commonly used in the UK.

Can use the new system for breast screening to women of all age groups, and will be allowed in the examination of surgical clinics within their own GP. Researchers say those who are behind the MARIA system they hope to make breast cancer screening, "naturally, such as dental or eye examination."

This technology is based on the MARIA system radar system developed initially to detect non-metallic landmines, and uses sound waves to three-dimensional 3D breast imaging in seconds.

System was developed by Microma, a company that began at the University of Bristol.

Called the women in the United Kingdom over the age of 50 for the detection of breast cancer every three years, using mammography, which uses low-dose X-rays. But were not painful, and mammography can be uncomfortable because the breast pressed between the plates of the X-ray. The new method, a woman developing breast over a cup of porcelain, so the breast is not exposed to pressure him.

Mammograms also does not work well in imaging breast tissue less dense, and this is more common in younger women and those who did not stop their periods.

When the scientists said the new imaging was conducted on women with breast cancer was the result detects tumors by 80 percent, a result that closed the success rate of radiographic imaging of the breast, and scientists expect that the ratio is 90 percent.

The final phase of clinical trials were women in Frenchay Hospital Breast Care Center in Bristol, as well as hospital Southmead, and also in Bristol.

Dr Mike Sher, breast cancer specialist at a hospital Southmead: "We are very excited about this new method just for breast imaging."

"It's not the disadvantages of this method compared to the current Balosil, such as mammography, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging, a fast, safe, comfortable and cheap, and already produces good photos and accurate
