There are an estimated 152, 685 Aboriginal people living in NSW, comprising 29% of the total Aboriginal population in Australia and representing the largest Aboriginal population of any State or Territory in Australia.

There are significant disparities in the health status of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people evident across the life cycle: from lower birth-weight, earlier onset of some chronic diseases, higher death rates and lower life expectancy.

The NSW Department of Health is committed to working in partnership with Aboriginal people and other government agencies to improve the health outcomes for Aboriginal people.

The Aboriginal Health Impact Statement is tool that must be used by all NSW Health branches and agencies to ensure that the health needs and interests of Aboriginal people are embedded into the development, implementation and evaluation of all NSW Health initiatives. Further information on the Impact Statement and other NSW Health Aboriginal programs and initiatives can be found at the links below.
